Advent Week Two - Cycle A

Second Sunday of Advent, December 4, 2022

Isaiah 11: 1-10; Psalm 72: 1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Romans 15: 4-9; Matthew 3: 1-12

Reflection

This week the reading from Isaiah talks about a new way of being, seeing and judging all because of the presence of “the spirit of the Lord.” The spirit is one of wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge and fear of the Lord. Justice will prevail and those viewed as enemies will be compatible. St. Paul prays that God will grant us to think in harmony and in union with Christ glorify the Father in one voice. In the Gospel passage, John the Baptist calls us to change and to be alert for the one who follows him and will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Prepare

Reflect on the gifts of the Holy Spirit described in the first reading from Isaiah 11: 1-3.

Research a saint or recall someone you know who helped justice and peace flourish.

Set aside time to remember and reflect on your baptism and confirmation. Use photos if available.

Celebrate

As you listen to the readings at Mass, let them settle deep within you and renew your relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Let your response to each reading be heartfelt and joyful.

During the General Intercessions, remember the people who shared the gifts of the Spirit with you by their example and advice.

Live

Choose a way you will “judge the poor with justice” and “decide aright for the land’s afflicted”.

Think of people different from you. How can you welcome them “as Christ welcomed you.”

Share with someone what “the kingdom of heaven” means to you.
